Athlete Cardiac Screening Tests
(The SAVE Program)

Care Station provides medical services to multiple school districts throughout Union and Essex counties. We have developed a Cardiac Screening Program to identify student athletes at risk for sudden cardiac death.

Sudden cardiac death in athletes continues to gain more national attention. These catastrophic events occur at all levels of sports. The most common causes of cardiac sudden death are hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and conduction abnormalities which can lead to cardiac irregularities. The first abnormality can usually be detected with an ECHOcardiogram(Echo). The second abnormality can usually be detected with an ELECTROcardiogram(EKG).

In an effort to identify athletes at risk of sudden cardiac death, Care Station has developed the Screening Athletic cardioVascular Evaluation (SAVE) Program. The SAVE Program can identify the majority of the causes of sudden death in athletes - structural heart defects and irregular heart beats.

In the past, the costs of these tests have prevented their routine use on a wide scale for student athletes. Now, Care Station has made arrangements to bring these services to high school athletes at a reasonable cost. Care Station can provide the EKG and Echo for a total of $195.00 per student. This testing requires an appointment.

If you are interested in obtaining this testing for your child, please telephone 908 587-5293 to determine when we will be hosting this screening program in your area.
